How Fast Should Family Law Attorneys Contact a New Lead?

Family law attorneys have more time to reach a new lead than debt or eviction attorneys, but the answer deadline and mediation still set a pace. A reasonable target is first contact within the first week after filing. The deadlines below come from the court's divorce page; the pace is our suggestion.

What deadlines apply?

Utah Courts says a respondent served in Utah has 21 days to answer, or 30 days if served outside the state, and that the divorce cannot be final until at least 30 days after filing. If the respondent answers, mediation is usually required.

What pace follows from that?

Contact in the first week, follow up before day 21, and stop if you hear nothing. That keeps you inside the period when most people are choosing a lawyer. The deadlines are fixed; the rest is judgment.

Why not wait for the other spouse to act?

Because in the divorce case we opened the respondent had no attorney, and that person is the one served with papers. A lawyer who writes before the answer is due is useful at the moment the papers arrive.

How do protective order cases differ?

Faster. According to Utah Courts, a judge who signs a temporary protective order schedules a hearing within 21 days, and the order usually lasts only until then. See protective order cases in Utah courts.
