PPC vs. Direct Mail: What Does a New Client Cost?
For a law firm, 1,000 pieces of mail sent to people with a newly filed case can bring about 7 to 8 new clients for roughly $1,250. 1,000 paid clicks bring about 8 clients too, but cost about $10,000. That is about $170 per client for mail and $1,250 for legal PPC.
These are loose, illustrative figures, not promises. Tell the calculator how many new clients you want and it works out how much mail or how many clicks each channel would take, and what that costs. It starts with typical numbers; change any of them to match your own.
What would it cost to get the same number of clients?
Pick how many new clients you want. Each row below shows what it would take through that channel, using typical numbers. Change any white box.
| Cost per piece or click ($) | % who respond | % of those who sign | Pieces or clicks needed | Total spend | Cost per client | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct mail | 1,000 | $1,250 | $167 | |||
| PPC ads | 938 | $9,375 | $1,250 |
For 7.5 new clients, mail costs about $1,250 and PPC about $9,375: mail is 7.5 times cheaper per client and saves about $8,125.
How do 1,000 pieces of mail compare to 1,000 clicks?
The mail here is warm: it goes to someone whose case was just filed, so the reader has an immediate need and the timing is right. That is very different from cold mail to a random list. The PPC column is given generous assumptions.
| Direct mail (warm, case-triggered) | PPC | |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | 1,000 pieces mailed | 1,000 clicks |
| Cost per contact | $1.25 (postcard) | $10 |
| Total spend | $1,250 | $10,000 |
| Contact becomes an inquiry | 3% (about 30 calls) | 4% (40 form requests) |
| Inquiry becomes a client | 1 in 4 (callers are motivated) | 1 in 5 (web forms are colder) |
| New clients | 7.5 | 8 |
| Cost per new client | about $170 | $1,250 |
The 3% response is a modest figure for warm mail, and the next sections show what happens if it comes in lower. PPC gets a 4% form rate, typical for search ads, and a 1-in-5 close rate, which is generous for people filling in a web form. Mail uses the postcard price; letters add $0.50 a piece.
Why is warm mail different from cold mail?
Cold mail goes to a list chosen by zip code or demographics. Most recipients do not need your service on the day it arrives, and cold lists are commonly reported at roughly 0.5% to 1% response.
Mail triggered by a filed case is aimed at a person who is dealing with the matter right now. Marketers consistently report that event-triggered mail responds several times better than cold lists, with 4% or more often quoted. Published benchmarks vary by report and year, though. DMA's prospect-list averages, for example, range from about 1% to about 5% depending on the edition, so treat any single figure as a rough guide. Speed matters as much as the list: a card that arrives after the person has already hired someone converts at close to nothing.
Why is the click price the other half of the story?
Legal is one of the most expensive categories in search advertising. LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average cost per click for attorneys at $9.87, and criminal and DUI keywords run higher, as the cost comparison of digital ads and mail explains. At that price, 1,000 clicks is a $10,000 budget.
Mail costs a fixed amount per piece no matter how many firms are bidding. With Revenue Spark that is $0.50 for the lead plus $0.75 for a postcard ($1.25), or $1.25 for a letter ($1.75). See pricing for the current numbers.
If your clicks cost $1.25, as they can for a landscaper or a house cleaner, PPC would win easily. Legal keywords do not cost that. The same 1,000 clicks that cost $1,250 in a cheap category cost $10,000 here.
What if the mail response is lower than 3%?
Here are the same 1,000 pieces at different response rates, with the same one-in-four close:
| 1,000 pieces mailed | Calls | New clients | Cost per client |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5% (low end for cold mail) | 5 | 1.25 | $1,000 |
| 1% (cold-list baseline) | 10 | 2.5 | $500 |
| 3% (warm, modest) | 30 | 7.5 | $170 |
| 5% (warm, strong) | 50 | 12.5 | $100 |
Compare those with $1,250 per client from PPC. Even if your warm mail performs like a cold list at 1%, it costs less than half as much per client, and at the very bottom of the range (0.5%) it is still below PPC.
What should you keep in mind?
- A test is cheap, and 1,000 pieces is enough to read. Mail costs a fixed amount per piece, so a weak first month costs $1,250, not the $10,000 that 1,000 clicks cost. A smaller batch swings too much on a few lucky or unlucky calls (the law of large numbers works against you). At 3%, 1,000 pieces should bring about 30 calls, which is enough to have a real idea after the first month. Three months at 1,000 a month gives you a solid number to plan around.
- Mail reaches people while they are still deciding. A click is someone who has already started shopping, and every competitor bidding on that keyword is in front of them too. Case-triggered mail puts your firm in front of the person in the days right after the filing, often before they have compared anyone. Many firms run both channels, as direct mail: the numbers shows with a worked example, but mail is the cheaper way to win the client.
- There is room to be wrong. Even if your warm mail performs like a cold list at 1%, a client still costs less than half the PPC figure. Measure your own calls, consultations and signed clients, then rerun the math. How to calculate your cost per acquired client shows how, and the cost of winning a client in Utah County applies it to a specific market.
- A strong piece and a fast answer lift every number above. How to make an effective postcard covers the design and copy, and answering the phone quickly turns more of those calls into clients.
What is the simplest way to test it?
Mail 1,000 pieces in a month, give the piece its own phone number or web address, and record every call and signed client. After month one you will have a good idea of your response and close rates, and after three months at 1,000 a month a solid one. Then compare the cost per client with what your ads cost you today. Turning a referral into mail walks through the setup: you upload one postcard or letter design, and each matching lead is printed, addressed and mailed for you.
