Personal Injury Case Types in Utah Courts

Utah courts stopped using the Personal Injury and Wrongful Death case types after July 1, 2016, so injury cases now appear under more specific types: automobile tort, premises liability, and malpractice among them. If you search for the old names, you find nothing. That explains why we found no cases under them in our sample week.

Which types are used?

From the court's case type list:

  • Automobile tort: "a case involving personal injury, property damage, or wrongful death resulting from alleged negligent operation."
  • Premises liability: "a case involving claims brought against the owner of real property, alleging the condition of the property to be the cause of personal injury."
  • Malpractice, medical tort: "a case alleging misconduct or negligence by a person in the medical profession acting in a professional capacity."

The court also lists product liability, asbestos, intentional tort, and other malpractice types, which we have not counted.

What did we find?

In our own review of one sample week (September 28 to October 2, 2026): automobile torts roughly 18 to 36, premises liability about six, and medical malpractice about four. The old Personal Injury, Property Damage, and Wrongful Death types returned none. Those are our observations, not published statistics.
